Self help

published: 2008-10-23

I had drinks with a few friends. I came late because I had gone to my flamenco classes. On answering the question how it went I said that I was probably making a complete fool out of myself in that advanced class.
"Well, it's good to be the worst at something," one of my friends said.
I've been thinking about that this morning. In general I think it's wise not to aim to do things you're bad at and to focus on what you're good at. But sometimes it's good to be bad. It's insightful, humbling and challenging. So why is it none of those self-help books bent on paths-of-least resistance would even as much as hint anything of the sort?
