The other day, my hairdresser and I small talked about my trip to the island.
Warily, she asked, “so did you – like – stay in a cabin on the beach?”
“No,” I said, “I have to admit, I stayed in a hotel.”
“Yeah,” she said, “the cabin would be the kind of thing you feel you have to do only because you’re a writer, right?”
Indeed, there are a lot of premonitions about how a writer is supposed to live her life. I’ve come to find that not many of them are true. Most writers I know aren’t alcoholics or loners. They are hard-working and disciplined people. Yes, they do escape. But usually they do so in their minds. Not in form.
