the art of coming closepublished: 2015-09-17
The producer and I spent some time tossing ideas this morning. These are my favourite moments. This is when eyes dart around the room, into corners and up to ceilings, and twinkle, when you stir in your coffee-cup which is in fact already empty, and when ideas start becoming real.
“I once had a friend who…” or “my ex recently experienced…” or “I hit a dead-end myself at the age of…”.
At one stage, the producer stopped mid-sentence and asked “sorry, is this hitting home too close?”
Stories are only any good when you write them truthfully. They have to come from some place you know, somewhere inside. The trick is to next give them to a third person, a character. Then, they are no longer yours and yet they are still the truth.
