Bio
Aliefka is a writer currently living in Amsterdam.
She was born in 1972 on the Caribbean island of Curaçao and spent her childhood moving from country to country. After having studied Law, Aliefka interned at the UN, worked as a lawyer in the Caribbean and went on to become a legal researcher for the University of Amsterdam. In 2001, she started working for film production companies. She did all sorts of jobs in the filmbizz, ranging from filmfinancing to distribution agreements; and from production supervision to directing/writing her own shorts.
Also in 2001, the first play Aliefka wrote was performed during a theatre festival in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. She continued to pursue writing. The film 'Adrenaline' based on a screemplay she had co-written was released theatrically in 2003.
In 2007, her first novel 'Sandblasted' (Dutch) was published. Read an excerpt, translated to English by Kate Brown. More about this novel here. (Dutch)
Today, Aliefka is a full-time writer. She just returned from a six month stay in Brazil, where she was doing research for the novel she is currently working on. She is also co-writing a screenplay entitled 'My Sister Came by Today' - with director Yan Ting Yuen (director of a.o. documentary 'Dinner with Murakami').
Her writing often deals with the issue of identity. Her characters escape into alter egos, fantasies, or wander the world looking for God knows what. They self-indulge and self-destruct.
